Personal Training Related Questions

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

I started running in high school and it was my first introduction to fitness and I absolutely loved it. After running for several years, I went to college to study athletic training which focuses on injury prevention, management, and maintenance. My education continued into exercise physiology where I study how whole body systems (cardiovascular, neuromuscular, endocrine, etc.) respond to exercise. How the human body works is absolutely incredible to me and being a personal trainer gives me the chance to see it first hand while helping clients work towards meaningful goals. I love helping people work towards goals like being healthy to see and play with their kids or grandkids or to maintain independence in their later life.

What is your fitness philosophy or training approach?

Thinking about exercise only in terms of the physical benefits limits what we can gain from training. I think regular exercise builds desirable character traits like discipline and commitment, increases confidence, relieves stress, builds relationships, and so much more that positively influences every other part of our lives.

What is your favorite type of workout or exercise?

My current stage of life with a young daughter and another on the way allows me to do a lot of walking and body weight or dumbbell exercises at home. I love both strength training and distance running and plan to get back to them more regularly down the road.

What do you enjoy most about working with clients?

I love seeing when something 'clicks' with someone. Like when they've adjusted their form and feel an exercise being more effective or when they see how their increased fitness levels change something they do outside of the fitness center.

How do you motivate clients to reach their fitness goals?

I think a good trainer can read clients and know when to push them to a higher intensity, when to encourage them to continue where they're at, or when to back off their intensity. By knowing this I can respond to individuals in whatever way is needed.

What's one piece of advice you always give to your clients?

Everything in life has a balance to it and is connected. Workouts are important, but they should have a positive effect on every other aspect of their overall wellbeing (social, mental, spiritual, etc.). If we're seeing the opposite effect, it's time to re-evaluate and come up with a new plan.

What sets your training style apart from others?

With my education background focusing on injuries, I love to focus on proper exercise form and addressing muscle imbalances to prevent injury.

How do you continue to expand your knowledge in the fitness industry?

I have a few publications I'll read regularly from well established fitness associations and listen to wellness podcasts.

Share a fun fact about yourself outside of the fitness world.

I've lived in both Florida and North Carolina for several years, but now live just a few miles away from where I grew up.

If you were a superhero, what would your fitness-focused superpower be?

Unlimited cardiovascular endurance!

What's your go-to guilty pleasure treat, and how do you balance it with a healthy lifestyle?

I love anything chocolate! When I choose to have dessert, I allow myself to enjoy it fully without guilt knowing 1 decision won't stop me from reaching a goal.

What do you love most about being part of Advanced Health Training and its community?

That it really is a community! So many clients have built relationships with each other and show genuine interest in and care for each other.
